Having celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2024, The Trust has long been a leader in the field, with innovations ranging from establishing the first donor-advised fund in the 1930s to making landmark grants, including some of the first to fight AIDS, build The High Line, support immigrant communities in the region, and respond quickly in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
OUR INVESTMENT STRUCTURE
The Trust operates across two structures, a not-for-profit corporation and a collection of charitable trusts, which together hold more than $3.6 billion in invested assets. The not-for-profit corporation, Community Funds, Inc., holds more than 1,950 funds with a total market value of approximately $2.0 billion. The Community Funds, Inc. Investment Pool (CFI Pool) represents approximately $1.6 billion of these assets. The collection of charitable trusts, also known as The New York Community Trust, comprises approximately 190 trusts managed by nine trustee banks, with total assets of approximately $1.6 billion.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director, Investment Operations and Treasury, provides investment analysis, reporting, and oversight for the assets held by The Trust and Community Funds, Inc.
As the primary liaison to The Trust’s external investment advisor, the Director ensures that investment performance, asset allocation, risk management, and governance activities align with organizational objectives. The role supports the Investment Committee, oversees relationships with investment managers, trustee banks, custodians, and other service providers, serves as a resource to donors on fund investments, and translates complex investment information into clear reporting for leadership.
In addition, the position leads investment operations, treasury and liquidity management. Responsibilities include overseeing investment reporting, compliance, audits, cash management, distributions, and operational controls while driving continuous improvement of systems and processes. The role also manages departmental operations and staff, supports donor-facing investment discussions, develops relevant content for external communications materials, oversees the quarterly update of investment performance information on The Trust's website and related prospect materials, and helps ensure the effective stewardship of assets used for administrative purposes.
Investment decisions are made by the Investment Committee, while cash and liquidity strategies are approved by EVP & COFO, in partnership with the Finance Committee. In this hands-on leadership role, the Director serves as the key liaison for investment and treasury operations, strengthens processes and controls, and supports the implementation of evolving priorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
External Investment Advisor Oversight & Investment Performance Management (40%)
- Serve as primary liaison to the external investment advisor, ensuring alignment with the investment policy, asset allocation, and organizational goals.
- Monitor portfolio performance, evaluating results against benchmarks and reviewing advisor activities on an ongoing basis.
- Work in coordination with the external investment advisor on performance reporting and investment-related data to ensure accuracy, transparency, and timely delivery to the Investment Committee and leadership.
- Track asset allocation, manager performance, liquidity, and risk exposures in coordination with internal and external partners.
- Coordinate Investment Committee processes, including agendas, materials, and advisor participation, supporting governance best practices and effectiveness.
- Facilitate onboarding and oversight of, and ongoing communication with external investment managers recommended by DAF donors to manage their funds.
Investment Operations, Spending Plan, & Donor Support (30%)
Operations
- Lead investment operations, ensuring strong controls, accurate reporting, and efficient execution across a multi-asset portfolio.
- Oversee transactions, valuations, audits, fee analysis, and operational due diligence; drive process and systems improvements.
- Ensure compliance with policies, audits, and regulatory requirements; enhance processes, controls, and reporting.
- Manage relationships with custodians and service providers, including oversight of service delivery and contracts.
- Manage department operations and develop staff while strengthening team performance and cross-functional collaboration.
Spending Plan & Distribution Administration
- Utilizing The Trust’s Spending Plan, calculate and analyze the annual grantmaking amount to be spent from the endowment.
- Perform investment analysis underlying annual endowment spending plan and coordinate with Finance on distributions and ongoing liquidity needs
- Prepare and present the annual spending plan reports for the Board, Finance Committee, and Investment Committee, including projected distribution amounts.
- Coordinate and communicate distribution instructions to trustee banks, ensuring timely and accurate processing of spending plan amounts.
- Monitor distribution activity and reconcile spending plan payments.
Donor Support
- Support donor engagement by translating investment strategy and performance into clear communications; participating in donor meetings as needed.
Treasury & Liquidity Management & Administrative Asset Oversight (20%)
- In partnership with the Vice President, Finance, and the EVP & COFO, develop and manage short- and long-term cash flow forecasts; oversee cash positioning to optimize liquidity while maximizing yield, and manage the investment strategy for operating and non-operating reserves.
- Partner with banking and investment institutions on treasury strategies.
- Support the Benefits Committee and Investment Committee in their oversight of The Trust’s pension plan, including reviewing investment strategy, manager selection, and performance.
Trustee Banks: Monitor Investments Held in Trust (10%)
- Lead the annual reviews with senior representatives of the nine trustee banks responsible for managing The Trust’s assets, review asset allocation, investment performance, and key administrative matters, while ensuring alignment with The Trust’s investment objectives and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Oversee the review of monthly performance reports and monitor trustee bank fees for accuracy and competitiveness.
Requirements
The Trust supports skills-based hiring and considers a range of experiences, including professional roles, internships, volunteer or project-based work, education, certifications, and professional or industry involvement.
- 10 - 15 years of progressive experience in investment manager oversight, operations, and liquidity management (e.g., endowment, foundation, asset manager, OCIO, custodian bank, family office, or DAF sponsor).
- Education in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- 3+ years of people management experience.
- Commitment to mission-driven work aligned with The Trust’s values.
- Relevant financial certifications (e.g., CIPM, CPA) preferred.
- Experience with Sage Intacct, Salesforce, or similar investment/portfolio systems preferred.

COMPENSATION
The annual salary range for this position is $200,000–$250,000, based on market data and internal equity; placement within the range depends on experience.
Our offices are primarily in-person, with remote work on Fridays and limited additional remote flexibility. Benefits include a pension plan, 8% 403(b) contribution, subsidized medical coverage, generous paid time off, fully paid family leave, and more.
The Trust qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program, allowing eligible employees to apply their service toward loan forgiveness.
