Department Overview
The Adult Ambulatory Neurology Department provides comprehensive outpatient neurological care through a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system, and neuromuscular system. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care that promotes optimal neurological health, enhances quality of life, and supports patients and families throughout their care journey.
The Department of Neurology and its affiliated practices comprise a multi-location, interdisciplinary program that integrates clinical care, research, education, and innovation. Specialty programs include Comprehensive Neurology, the Layton Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center, ALS and Neuromuscular Disorders, Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Headache Center, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Program, and the Oregon Stroke Center. Through collaboration across specialties and care settings, we provide coordinated, evidence-based care while advancing neurological science through research and training the next generation of neurologists and healthcare professionals.
Adult Ambulatory Neurology Resource RN
The Adult Ambulatory Neurology RN provides comprehensive nursing care and care coordination for patients with complex neurological conditions in the outpatient setting. Primary areas of focus include neuromuscular disorders and multiple sclerosis, while also supporting patients across a broad range of neurological subspecialties. The RN serves as a key clinical resource for patients, families, providers, and interdisciplinary team members, facilitating ongoing disease management and ensuring continuity of care across the treatment continuum.
In addition to providing comprehensive outpatient nursing care and care coordination, the RN also provides the following:
- Provides clinical nursing support for patients with complex neurological conditions, with a primary focus on neuromuscular disorders and multiple sclerosis.
- Performs clinical assessment, triage, and management of patient concerns received through Epic In Basket, MyChart, telephone calls, and other approved communication channels.
- Utilizes clinical judgment to prioritize patient needs, address symptoms and treatment-related concerns, and escalate urgent or complex issues as appropriate.
- Collaborates with clinicians and interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement, and coordinate individualized care plans.
- Coordinates diagnostic testing, referrals, follow-up care, and treatment plans across multiple specialties and care settings.
- Facilitates access to specialty therapies, including infusions, injections, and disease-modifying treatments, through collaboration with infusion centers, specialty pharmacies, insurance payors, and external healthcare organizations.
- Coordinates and supports complex infusion protocols, including treatment planning, safety monitoring, laboratory and authorization requirements, patient education, and communication among clinicians, infusion centers, and pharmacy teams to ensure safe and timely delivery of therapy.
- Supports medication access, prior authorization appeals, and other processes that reduce barriers to care.
- Provides patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, symptom management, and available resources.
- Participates in interdisciplinary care team meetings to review and address complex patient care needs.
- Maintains effective communication with patients, families, clinicians, ancillary departments, and community partners to promote continuity of care.
- Documents clinical assessments, interventions, patient communications, and care coordination activities according to departmental and organizational standards.
- Utilizes Epic, Epic Secure Chat, and other approved communication platforms to support patient care and team collaboration.
- Manages a high volume of patient communications and care coordination activities while maintaining quality, safety, and service standards.
- Contributes to departmental and organizational goals related to quality outcomes, patient experience, access to care, and efficient care delivery.
- Other functions as assigned.
Adult Ambulatory Neurology RNs are responsible for maintaining knowledge of and complying with applicable regulatory, accreditation, organizational, and professional nursing practice requirements, including the Oregon Nurse Practice Act and OHSU policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of clinical nursing experience
- BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
- ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
- Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
- Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License and Washington State License
- BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year or more working in an outpatient or ambulatory clinic environment providing clinical triage, including advanced assessment and telephone triage
- Three (3) years or more neurological nursing experience
- Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication with patients, families, providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience developing and delivering patient and family education, including creation of educational materials and resources.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple competing demands.
- Demonstrated professionalism, adaptability, and customer service skills in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Proficiency with Epic electronic medical record (EMR) systems and other healthcare technology platforms.
- Experience coordinating care for patients with complex neurological or chronic medical conditions.
- Experience with specialty medication management, prior authorization processes, and infusion coordination.
- Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification (CNRN) or other relevant specialty certification in
- neuroscience, ambulatory care, or chronic disease management.
Additional Details
Length of Orientation Experienced Nurse
• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
• Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
