Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The News Reporter/Producer/Host will be a voice for a trusted news source in the Monterey Bay Area. Responsibilities include: reporting, writing, editing and voicing audio stories for broadcast on 90.3 KAZU, and at times on NPR partners or NPR, and writing, editing, and producing digital stories for KAZU.org, which will also involve taking pictures.
NOTE: we are hiring two reporters. One will work a regular M-F workweek, the other will work Sunday through Thursday.
Examples of Duties
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting:
Researches story ideas and pitches short-, medium- and long-term stories at weekly news meetings.
Develops sources by meeting with local leaders, newsmakers and community members, particularly in underserved areas.
Audio Production:
Records audio in the field, on the phone and in a studio.
Mixes and produces stories, including long-form work for broadcast or podcast.
Digital Production:
Writes companion digital stories for audio pieces following AP Style.
Creates/collaborates on station social media content, including photos/video.
Mentorship:
Collaborates with student interns on news stories, social media posts and other projects.
Administrative:
Helps maintain the story tracking database, source database, photo library and other digital assets.
On-Air Work:
Trains to host or be live on-air as needed, including possibly on holidays and in breaking news or special coverage situations.
Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns.
This is a hybrid position that requires living in the three-county listening area and working in the office 2-3 days/week and in the field or from home the other days.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four year college or university.
2-4 years of relevant professional experience in a daily audio news environment.
OR
A combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Certifications or Licenses:
Valid Driver’s License in the state of California. Company car/vehicle not provided, must be able to drive to/from the field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in a public radio newsroom
Knowledge of current Santa Cruz, Monterey and/or San Benito County and regional issues.
Spanish fluency.
Data reporting skills.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
