NewsNation a 24/7 national media outlet for all Americans. We believe in news that shows multiple perspectives and considers every community across all 50 states. We are dedicated to a truly all-platform experience: a national cable channel plus a vibrant digital presence.
The Copy Editor is an integral part of the editorial process.
This person is a strong journalist, using their expertise to ensure excellence in content created for all of NewsNation's digital platforms. This person needs to be able to excel both at breaking news and in-depth storytelling and will need to be able to edit a wide variety of story content.
This job is based in Chicago. Hours are 4pm-midnight M-F, but flexibility may be required.
Position Description
- Proofreading and line-editing stories, newsletters and other content
- Craft compelling and searchable headlines and subheads that inform, encourage readers to click into story, and have a tone that reflects the NewsNation identity.
- Writing accurate and SEO-friendly headlines
- Maintaining NewsNation and AP style
- Monitoring the front of the site and app regularly
- Clear communication and prioritization
- Working with managers to coach writing best practices
- Checking meta descriptions & alternative headlines (social, etc.)
- Reviewing for violations of NewsNation brand (tone, approach, etc.)
- Help maintain and update the NewsNation style book
- Edit wire and local network-affiliated content for a national audience to ensure standards for journalistic integrity and production quality are met.
- Salary Range: $60,000 - $75,000
Qualifications
- 3+ years working as a copy editor or similar role in a major newsroom
- Experience in large local or national newsrooms (broadcast and digital a plus)
- Quick decision maker and creative thinker
- Strong news judgement and ability to determine prioritization of stories
- Experience working with content management systems like WordPress
- Excellent communicator, both oral written
