We are seeking a Head of Marketing to lead marketing across Museums of History NSW, shaping how we connect with audiences, visitors and stakeholders across the state.
This senior role drives integrated marketing that builds awareness, grows visitation and strengthens our brand across a diverse portfolio of museums, heritage sites, collections and programs. Working with rich and distinctive content, you’ll bring our programs, places and collections to life in ways that are engaging, contemporary and audience-focused.

- Clerk Grade 11/12. Remuneration package includes salary ($149,739 - $173,174), employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.
- Full-time ongoing employment.
- The role will work across Sydney.
What we do
Museums of History NSW brings together a portfolio of iconic museums, rich collections and heritage sites, the nation’s oldest archive collection, vital recordkeeping services and expert staff.
We bring history to life by sharing the stories of our places and collections. Through the State Archives Collection, we manage NSW’s official documentary heritage, supporting government transparency and the public’s right to access information.
These two roles do not just sit side by side – they inform and enrich each other. By preserving and making accessible our places, collections and archives, we create opportunities for people to explore the past and better understand their own place in the world. Museums of History NSW is a state cultural institution, established under the Museums of History NSW Act 2022. It is an agency of the NSW Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport (DCITHS).
What you'll do with us:
The Head of Marketing leads the development and delivery of marketing strategy across MHNSW, translating organisational priorities into clear, audience-focused activity that drives awareness, visitation and engagement.
The role is responsible for delivering integrated campaigns and setting direction across digital, editorial and content, and multi-channel marketing, ensuring activity is coordinated, contemporary and aligned to organisational priorities.
Operating in a complex and high-profile environment, the role contributes to MHNSW’s external profile and reputation, including supporting media activity, and uses data and insights to inform performance and continuous improvement. The role also supports membership as part of a broader audience growth approach.

What you need to do to apply

- Tell us about a portfolio of marketing campaigns you’ve led, ideally across a diverse or complex program, where you were accountable for both strategy and results. How did you set priorities, allocate resources, and what outcomes did you achieve?
- Describe how you’ve built and led a high-performing marketing team at a senior level. What approaches did you take, and how did this translate into results?
Essential requirements of the role:
- Tertiary qualifications in marketing, communications or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Substantial senior leadership experience in marketing and communications, including leading and developing specialist teams.
- Demonstrated experience managing budgets and resources within public sector or comparable governance frameworks.
- Experience operating within government policy, approvals and legislative environments.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in sensitive contexts.
Key knowledge and experience:
- Extensive experience developing and delivering integrated marketing and communications strategies that strengthen organisational reputation and drive measurable engagement outcomes.
- Strong experience leading multi-channel campaign delivery, media strategy and digital communications within a complex organisation.
- Demonstrated experience managing sensitive or high-profile communications issues in a government, cultural or regulated environment.
- Proven ability to build stakeholder alignment across executive leaders, program teams, media and partners.
- Experience interpreting performance insights and campaign reporting to inform strategic decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Understanding of contemporary marketing practice, audience engagement trends and emerging digital platforms.
