DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: Advancement refers to making progress in various avenues related to The Center’s mission and vision. It comes in the form of volunteer resources, fundraising, event management, as well as marketing and communications. The Center's Advancement operation is responsible for the strategic process and advance of the Center’s mission-appropriate constituents. This includes, but is not limited to: staff, ambassadors, patients, clients, volunteers, and financial investors (donors). This is all achieved through the integration of the Center’s volunteer resources program, marketing, communications, AIDS/LifeCycle, and various development/fundraising platforms. The Advancement team functions as a full-service engagement provider for the largest LGBTQ organization in the world. 

JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Marketing & Communications (MarCom) will set and guide the strategy for all communications and collateral to consistently articulate the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s (Center) mission. This position will ensure the Center is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within this diverse network and constituent base of the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles and beyond. The Director will work closely with the Center’s senior peer group within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives. This position will build, grow, and protect the Center brand through public relations, media relations, advertising, digital and social marketing, investor/donor relations, executive and policy communication, as well as brand strategy. 

1)    Work in close partnership with Chief Executive Officer and senior management team to set communication strategies and implementation plans;
2)    Work closely with Policy department to help shape substance and direction of Center’s broader policy initiatives;
3)    Collaborate with Advancement operation to set communication campaigns and cultivate regular, impactful messaging to external audiences including donors, ambassadors, volunteers, etc.;
4)    Assure Brand management and utilization across Center and to external audiences;
5)    Participate as active member of Center management team and Center’s Advancement department and leadership structure;
6)    Directs MarCom staff within Advancement operation (approx. 10 team members ranging from writers/editors to graphics artists, media relations directors to platform and systems managers);
7)    Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across the Center's discreet audiences in collaboration with the Center leadership team and constituents;
8)    Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments (ambassadors, donors, etc.) and leads to measurable action; decide who, where, and when to disseminate;
9)    Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities;
10)    Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, magazines, social media, advertising, annual reports, e-newsletters, phone apps, etc., as well as the Center’s website;
11)    Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly;
12)    Track and measure the level of engagement via all mediums over time; track success and troubleshoot challenges;
13)    Collaborate with other Center-based teams to identify the public voice of the brand;
14)    Create style guides and brand voice outlines for all public relations, marketing, advertising, and other vital departments;
15)    Consult with executive management to develop effective communication procedures and policies for various situations or crises;
16)    Draft press releases and speeches following organizational news;
17)    Write letters, interdepartmental memos and other business correspondence as needed;
18)    Communicate with media outlets and journalists and create press kits as needed;
19)    Develop materials to educate staff on communication practices;
20)    Coach and assist team members on improving communication skills and impact;
21)    Perform communications research and monitor the progress of various communications strategies;
22)    Identify and manage workflow with outside talent, agencies, and consultants (e.g. graphic artists, photographers, videographers, freelance writers, etc.) as needed or warranted;
23)    Other duties as assigned;


1)    Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people;
2)    A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people;
3)    A minimum of 10 years of communications experience, ideally in an in-house leadership role within a complex, nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications;
4)    Ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels, required;
5)    Agency experience, a plus;
6)    Highly collaborative style, experience developing and implementing communications strategies;
7)    Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills;
8)    A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently;
9)    Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to manage by influence;
10)    High energy and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels;
11)    Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters;
12)    Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives;
13)    Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
