THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Information Technology Department is seeking a motivated and dynamic System Administrator. This position is responsible for the overall administration and support of the City's networks and computer systems including analysis, planning, design, installation, maintenance, and management. Provides top-level technical expertise with advanced knowledge and experience in: networking; physical and virtual servers; desktop, laptop, and tablet computers; storage array systems; backup systems; operating systems and utilities; and cybersecurity technologies. Possess knowledge of information technology standards and best practices, and advanced troubleshooting skills and abilities.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
  • Administration and support of infrastructure technologies, specifically Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft SCCM, VMware vSphere, anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-malware software, Internet communications, remote access, and computer and network utilities.
  • Network equipment (such as switches, routers, and firewalls), servers, storage devices and storage area networks (SANs), backup and recovery systems, computer work stations, laptops, and tablets.
  • Principles and business practices of computer systems, networking, data communications, backup, disaster recovery, and disk storage.
  • Windows applications, databases, and related configuration requirements.
  • Basic principles and best practices of networks and security.
  • Operation, diagnosis, and troubleshooting of network and computer equipment and software.
Skill In: 
  • Managing, installing, supporting, and troubleshooting networks, computer systems, and applications.
Ability to:
  • Perform systems analysis and write specifications for networks and computer systems software and hardware.
  • Direct and oversee the work of others.
  • Analyze, design, specify, install, configure, support, and troubleshoot networks, computer systems, and applications.
  • Make recommendations in computer selection and software application packages.
  • Manage network, computer system, and application security.
  • Identify, evaluate, and solve networking and computer system problems.
  • Work independently to meet schedules and time lines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Train users on applications and technology.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.


Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience administering, maintaining, and supporting large enterprise networks and computer systems.
 
Education and/or Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science or a related field. 
 
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:
MCSE and/or CCNA certification desirable.
